Autism is diagnosed through a comprehensive assessment process rather than a single medical test. This typically involves observations, interviews, and standardised tools like the ADOS-2. The process is guided by the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism developed by the Autism CRC.
Medicare rebates are available for autism assessments, including those performed by speech pathologists, for individuals up to 25 years old. These rebates are part of the Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders initiative, and require a GP referral to a paediatrician or psychiatrist, who can then refer to allied health professionals like speech pathologists for assessment.
Full payment is due 7 days before the assessment appointment. Assessments will not be undertaken if payment is not received prior to the appointment.
Our preference is for a referral from a Paediatrician, in order to ensure that your child is getting the appropriate level of service around a diagnosis of Autism. Please note that a referral letter from a private Paediatrician or Psychiatrist is required if you want to claim a Medicare rebate for the assessment (for people under 25 years old).
Usually, we will give feedback about the outcome of the assessment on the day. When more information is required (e.g. from school or therapists), we will ask for consent to speak with the appropriate people. Contacting the other informants may typically take one or two weeks, depending on their availability.
Reports will usually be available within 4 weeks on completion of the assessment process.
